Extended warranties are great products– for the companies providing the warranties, but not for you.

Put simply, companies do not deliberately go into business to pay more than they collect ;-)

The warranty providers know pretty well how much they will pay to cover damage/replacement on all their policies aggregated together. They add a substantial profit margin and divide by the number of policies to get the price they charge you.

Their business model is like a casino running a clean game– the bet is still a bad deal for you even when the company is smart enough to pay you promptly with a smile (just as it’s shortsighted for a big casino to cheat).

In short, the expected return on your investment on an extended warranty is almost always negative. You can only expect to win if you know you are a harsh user who is -much- more likely to break your item. Even then, it only works if enough other ordinary users continue to buy the warranties.

This argument does not imply that you should never buy insurance. If you lose your home, for example, the actual cost impact you feel is likely to be much larger than the dollar cost of rebuilding it because you will not be able to raise the money on your own after a disaster. This allows the insurance company to take in more than it pays out, making a profit, while still providing you a useful service.

It works because the premium you pay is less than your expected cost of a disaster, even though the premium will be more than your expected dollar receipts from claims.

A good touchstone is that you should not choose to insure unless a worst-case loss would be financially crippling.

After having a previous MP3 player lose its hard drive (and thereby losing the money I paid for it), I insured the latest one with SquareTrade. Sure enough, after two years of hard use by my teenager, the latest MP3 player broke its headphone jack and one of the command switches on the front. I contacted SquareTrade, they immediately provided me a mailing label, I sent the unit in, they quickly evaluated it and declared it kaput. They deposited the warranty amount, minus the postage to mail the unit to them, in my PayPal account quickly and with no hassle. Well done, SquareTrade!

I strongly recommend! I’ve tried my best to purchase a Square Trade Warranty on any electronic I purchase off eBay. I confess, I am an eBayholic; so because of that I’ve had seven (7) Square Trade Warranties. Three (3) are active warranties and other four (4) are inactive due to having to make a claim on the item. It was pretty unfortunate that I had to make the claim on the I purchased and use the warranties but the best part was how Square Trade handled the claim. Each claim was so simple to file and they had it resolved and paidoff within a couple of days. I am extremly pleased and they are over well worth your time and investment. Thanks to all the support at Square Trade I’ve never lost a penny because they even provide you with a prepaid UPS label to have the item shipped back to their center for their product specialist to review.

I give them Five (5) stars and an A+++++.

The process worked great for me two times. They repaired my digital camera and they reimbursed me for my son’s water logged i Pod. It could not have been easier. With accident insurance you do have to pay a $50 deductible, but that seems reasonable to me.

Great company to deal with. This is the second warranty I have had to claim with them and both occurrences were handled quickly and to my complete satisfaction. I will deal with them again.
